Florence - The Ancient Walls of Pisa are under restoration. The deadline for the award of the contract for restoration works on the East and West part of the Wall Project ended on 31 October. This is a total investment worth 532 thousand euros, 366 thousand of which were financed by the Pisa Foundation. Two main segments of the ancient walls are the focus of this new contract: one is the part starting by Giardino Scotto and overlooking Lungarno Fibonacci, and the other is the wall by the Citadel, both alongside via Bonanno behind the Arsenali Repubblicani, and along via Terzanaia, over the Lungarno opposite the Citadel. The contract will also include reclamation and safety works on the Bastione San Giorgio, near Campo Abetone. The Commission received 12 offers, and is now going to analyze them in order to award the contract: the aim is to launch the works by the end of this year, and complete them by 2018. The project entails conservative restoration and strengthening of the curtain walls, following the principles of monument restoration, which tend to minimize any change of wall structures, preferring natural materials such as stone, bricks, wood, iron and natural lime, fully re-using any ancient material and using traditional techniques. Finally, on the Bastione San Giorgio, action is aimed at eliminating weeds currently infesting the walls and any improper element from the area, and ensuring that the indoor areas are safe, also by installing doors and windows.
