Slow Food: Petrini in China to launch "Menu for Change"

Turin - On the occasion of the seventh Slow Food International Congress held in Chengdu, China, from September 29 to October 1, Slow Food launched "Menu for Change", the first global communication and fundraising campaign on food and climate change. Carlo Petrini, President of Slow Food, when addressingthe 400 delegates representing the Slow Food and Terra Madre network from 90 countries, stated that "global warming is a reality, not a problem for the distant future, and we can already see the effects it has today". "It is Slow Food's duty - Carlo Petrini said - to work on climate change: there can be no quality, no good food, without respect for the environment, for resources and for human labor. We should also bear in mind that food production and its supply account for a fifth of global warming." With Menu for Change, Slow Food wants to show that "starting from food, each of us can and must make a difference, helping to stop this phenomenon, since we can no longer afford to postpone action: we must act now"."When it comes to reducing emissions, delaying is no longer an option - Petrini added - it is an obligation. We must all intervene, for example by eliminating waste, especially food waste. Every year, European citizens waste 179 kg of food per capita.Food waste produces 3.3 billion tons of greenhouse gas."
