Oman: Fisia Italimpianti to build a desalination plant
Muscat - Italian company Fisia Italimpianti has entered Oman in a joint venture to help design and build a 100 million dollar desalination plant in Salalah.
Together with joint-venture partner Abengoa, the company was awarded by a consortium led by ACWA Power with Veolia and Dhofar International Development & Investment Holding Co.
The 113,650 m3/day project, in which Fisia has a 51 percent stake in the JV, will use reverse osmosis (RO) membrane technology and is expected to be completed in 27 months.
Earlier this year the company, also in a JV with Abengoa, secured a 255 million dollar agreement with ACWA Power to build a 250,000 m3/day membrane desalination plant in Shuaiba, Saudi Arabia.
Part of the Salini Impregilo group, Fisia Italimpianti now has over than four million cubic metres per day of installed capacity, in both thermal and reverse osmosis.
With references in Kuwait, Qatar, Abu Dhabi and Dubai, the majority of the company's installations use multi-stage flash (MSF) thermal desalination technology.
Although the company has a heritage in thermal desalination, this is the second membrane-based project secured this year in the Middle East as it looks to diversify its portfolio.
