Tokyo: Giuseppe Verdi’s “La Traviata” speaks Japanese

Giuseppe Verdi’s “La Traviata” will arrive in Tokyo at the beginning of September. The Italian Institute of Culture will open its ‘Umberto Agnelli’ Auditorium to Italian enthusiasts from the 1st to the 3rd of September. The initiative is part of the 'Heart of Opera' project, which was launched in 2013. The performance will be in Italian, with the introduction and subtitles in Japanese. Massimo Fiocchi Malaspina will be conducting the orchestra.

Berlin: Wo ist Elena Ferrante? Luzzatti district has landed in Germany

Elena Ferrante’s Naples and her famous book L’amica geniale (The brilliant friend) have landed in Berlin, and are re-lived in a photographic reportage by Ottavio Sellitti. The initiative is run by the Italian Institute of Culture and will be showing Roberto Faenza’s film at the inauguration of an exhibition devoted entirely to the author. The film was shot in 2016, and testifies what is today the dream of the economic boom: the shaded forms of both new and old buildings, the dusty roads and the lives of the inhabitants. The 'napoletanità' of the neighborhood is represented as a microcosm of the same relationships and contradictions existing in the periphery of Paris, Berlin or Detroit. The event is on the 7th of September in the presence of Sellitti, Faenza and the producer, Elda Ferri.

Paris: Italian architects in France, reflections on a sustainable future

Under what conditions can you find Italian architecture? How do you account for its diffusion on an international level? On the occasion of Design Week 2017, the Order of Architects, Planners, Landscapists and Conservationists of Rome and the surrounding provinces will gather Italian architects working between France and Italy on the 8th of September at the Institute of Italian Culture in Paris. Organised by Alessia Bennani, a collaborator for the magazine "XY Digitale", the conference will not only be a chance to present the "Yearbook 02" to the Parisian public, but also to draw up a balance sheet of artistic, ecological and urban challenges defining architectural craftsmanship.

Montreal: a meeting with the ‘traveling genius’ Matteo Duca

A meeting with Italian researchers in Montreal. The Italian Institute of Culture has organized a series of meetings from the 11th of September entitled "The traveling Genius: Italians of art, humanities and science ... in the world". Guest of honor will be Matteo Duca, currently a postdoctoral researcher at the National Institute of Scientific Research of Varennes, who will talk about the nitrogen cycle's imbalance and its effects on the environment. In 2012, Duca earned his PhD with honors at the University of Leiden (The Netherlands) with a thesis on electrochemistry and catalysis. This research field studies the chemical reactions that require electricity to occur, and those that, instead, produce it.

Pisek: the violinist Luca Ciarla at the COOL V PLOTĚ Festival

Italian violinist Luca Ciarla will take part in the 8th edition of the COOL V PLOTĚ festival on the 8th and 9th of September in the courtyard of the Prácheň Museum in Písek, Czech Republic. Violinist, pianist and composer, Ciarla is one of the most original and astonishing artists of his generation. His music is rooted in jazz, but is characterized by refined influences from classical and ethnic music, giving rise to a new fascinating acoustic sound that has led him to perform successfully at festivals and concert performances in several countries, including the Czech Republic. The event is organized by the Italian Cultural Institute in Prague.

Amsterdam: 'Fiore' by Claudio Giovannesi to conclude the Rai Film Festival

Claudio Giovannesi's film Fiore (Flower) will be screened in Amsterdam on September 1st to conclude the Rai Film Festival at the Italian Cultural Institute. Daphne's relationship with Robbery and Josh, a young robber, becomes the emblem of a lack of love, but also of the desire for freedom that breaks every law. Inaugurating the festival was an exhibition of Un Paese quasi Perfetto (An Almost Perfect Country) by Massimo Gaudioso.

Pretoria: “Food in Fellini’s drawings” at the Hilton Art Festival

The exhibition 'Il cibo nei disegni' di Federico Fellini (Food in Federico Fellini’s Drawings) will be shown at the Hilton Arts Festival in Pretoria, which will take place from the 14th to the 17th September 2017 in the Theater Foyer, Centenary Centre. The exhibition, organized by the Italian Cultural Institute of Pretoria in collaboration with the Dante Alighieri Society in Durban, consists of 19 sketches by the iconic film director and will be accompanied by two videos: 'Il lungo viaggio' (Long Journey) a short animation by Andrej Khrzhanovskij based on the Master’s drawings, and the documentary Il cibo nel cinema di Fellini (Food in the cinema of Fellini) by Giuseppe Ricci.

Helsinki:  Italian singer Zucchero returns to Finland after 18 years with a concert

Italian artist Zucchero is returning to Finland and playing a concert in Helsinki on September 8th; the first after a long absence of 18 years in the Scandinavian country. The singer will present his latest album "Black Cat" at the Tavastia Club in the Finnish capital. The event was organized in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute of Helsinki. Zucchero, aka Adelmo Fornaciari, is one of the best-known Italian artists abroad, and has sold over 60 million records during his career.

Lisbon: last remaining days of the exhibition on the treasures of the Vatican Museums

There are just a few remaining days (until the 10th of September) to visit the Exhibition ‘Madonna- Tesouros dos Museus do Vaticano' in Lisbon, organized by the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga, with the support of the Italian Cultural Institute. For the first time in Portugal, a collection of works from the famous collections of the Vatican museums, especially its precious Pinacoteca, compose an exhibition that includes paintings by Italian Primitives (Taddeo di Bartolo, Sano di Pietro, Fra 'Angelico) and great Renaissance and Baroque masters (Raffaello, Pinturicchio, Salviati, Pietro da Cortona, Barocci), as well as notable tapestries and illuminated codices from the Vatican Apostolic Library collection.

Moscow: Italian Pop Art by Giosetta Fioroni arrives in Russia

Italian Pop Art will arrive in Moscow with an exhibition of Italian artist Giosetta Fioroni’s work scheduled from the 6th of September to the 22nd of October at the MMOMA (The Moscow Museum of Modern Art). Fioroni is one of the most significant representatives of so-called "Italian Pop Art", a variant strongly influenced by the European spirit with the ability to criticise the most well-known American matrix. The exhibition is dedicated to her work during the sixties - her most well-known period. La spia ottica (The Optical Spy) (1968) is recreated in Moscow. It is a strong installation/performance which metaphorically witnesses the doubts and anxieties of a historically troubled period.
