Italy-USA: Ambassador Varricchio, Columbus united the world

Rome - Donald Trump has given Christopher Columbus "the role he deserves in the history of this Country" and confirmed "the solidity of the relationship between the United States and Italy": said the Italian ambassador to Washington, Armando Varricchio, in an interview with Il Corriere della Sera. In his message on Columbus Day, said the diplomat, the president of the United States also highlighted the "vibrant" contribution of the Italo-American community and recognized the "work" carried out by the Italian Government "since the first days of this administration".Referring to the polemics on Columbus and whether his statues should be removed, as advocated by some Americans, Verricchio explained that this "debate is linked to other controversial facts in America's history", such as the American Civil War. "It's an American debate. We observe it with respect, but obviously we cannot judge people from the past based on today's standards", said the ambassador, "Columbus was a pioneer of globalization. He united the world, he didn't divide it".
