Prosciutto di Parma

Parma - The Prosciutto di Parma, also known as Parma Ham, will be marketed in Canada under its trademark name: this is the result of a free trade agreement - CETA (Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement) - between the European Union and Canada, which will enter into force on September 21. Specifically, the name "Prosciutto di Parma" will coexist with the "Parma" trademark currently owned by the Canadian company Maple Leaf. The Consorzio del Prosciutto di Parma noted that it is a historic achievement, given the fact that before this agreement was made Canada and other Anglo-Saxon countries did not have a system for protecting products with geographical indication. Instead, protection was reserved to the owner of the trademark who had first registered it.Prior to the agreement, Prosciutto di Parma was already marketed in Canada, but had been sold under the names "The Original Prosciutto" and "Le Jambon Original" for over 20 years, since the actual "Parma" trademark had been purchased by the Canadian company Maple Leaf, which also sells its own raw ham using this name.
