Rome - A rare and ancient map of "Rome and its forts" dating back to 1602 will be on exhibit at the first international edition of "Roma Map Fair" - a specialist trade show dedicated to cartography, atlases, travel books and city views in ancient prints - scheduled to be held at Minerva Auctions, housed in Palazzo Odescalchi, in Piazza Santi Apostoli, from tomorrow until 1 October. The street map of ancient Rome is the work of Sebastiano Dal Re and was taken from a collection entitled "Speculum Romanæ Magnificentiae". The map on display is the second edition, by Giovanni Orlandi. Its distinguishing feature is that it represents the eternal city with the fortifications built by order of Pope Paul IV (born Gian Pietro Carafa) outside some of the city's gates. "Roma Map Fair" is set to welcome exhibitors from all over Italy, as well as from the USA, England, France, Germany and Cyprus. Entrance is free of charge. "The exhibition" the organizer Gabriele Barbone explains - "was launched to accommodate the growing interest on the part of enthusiasts, scholars, collectors and industry specialists. Following the positive experience at Napoli Map Fair, which witnessed thousands of visitors in just a few days, we hope to repeat the experience in the Capital, offering visitors the chance to come into contact with major world-wide exhibitors. We will also be welcoming two of the largest industry bookstores in the US".
