Cultural heritage: marble from Caligula's ship returns to Italy
Rome - The United States returned part of the marble bridge from Caligula's ship. The remain will be kept in the Museum of Roman Ships in Nemi, thirty kilometers from Rome. It is mosaic fragment from the bridge of one of the emperor's ships. The announcement was made by the Italian Minister for Cultural Heritage Dario Franceschini. He explained: "The United States returned several archaeological remains from illegal diggings or thefts that took place in our country. Thanks to the investigations from the Cultural Heritage division of the Carabinieri, and the active cooperation of the US authorities, Italy will soon receive the precious fragment from the flooring of one of Caligula's ships that were found in the Nemi lake, two red-painting vases from the 5th-6th century B.C. and several ancient coins, books and manuscripts. They will be returned to their original location".
