Venice - The Board of Directors of the Venice Biennale, on proposal of President Paolo Baratta, resolved to appoint Ralph Rugoff as Director of the Visual Arts Sector with the specific task of curating the 58th International Art Exhibition, which will begin on May 11th, 2019. Rugoff is the Director of the Hayward Gallery in London: opened in 1968, it is regarded as one of the leading public art galleries in the UK; it is part of the Southbank Centre, the largest art centre in Europe that receives significant funding from the Arts Council of England. In 2015, Rugoff was the Artistic Director of the 13th Biennale de Lyon entitled La vie moderne. "The appointment of Ralph Rugoff confirms the Biennale's intention to make the Exhibition become a gathering place for visitors, art and artists. The exhibition will involve visitors by allowing them to directly interact with the artworks in which memory, the unexpected, perhaps even provocation, and new and different elements can stimulate the eyes, mind and feelings of viewers, so that they can enjoy an intense and direct experience," Baratta pointed out.
