Rome students win best Italian startup prize
 Tor Vergata

(AGI) Milan, June 24 - An antibacterial product has won the prize of best Italian startup for students from Rome's Tor Vergata University. The JA StartUp Program, which supports European university students identifying business opportunities, planning resources and moving ideas into action ended on June 24 in Milan. BTeam, founded by Tor Vergata students, was chosen as the best Italian startup and will represent Italy at the European competition in Bucharest on Jul. 6-8 with finalists from 20 other countries. BTeam developed an efficient, cheap and environmentally friendly process to synthesize Bromothymol (BT), which occurs naturally and acts as an effective anti-bacterial agent, and is better than thymol which is used in many hygiene products such as mouthwash. The industrial use of bromothymol has been very costly because of the complexity of the extraction process. Second and third place went to EasyLife from Reggio Calabria University for a bracelet that uses an algorithum based on biometric data to warn of epileptic fits, and Bee Italians, a project on reducing honey production to allow bees to repopulate also from Tor Vergata University.
